Dear St. Louis Parents,

After discussion with Catholic Charities, an opportunity for us to come together as a school community to support those impacted by the destruction caused by Hurricane Harvey has arisen. At this Friday’s All School Mass, we will be taking up a “gift card collection” for families that have been affected by the devastation. A representative from Catholic Charities has advised us that the most valuable item to these families is gift cards to HEB and Wal Mart. We are asking for gift cards in whatever amount you are able to contribute. If you do not have the opportunity to purchase a gift cards, we can also accept cash or checks which we will use to buy Scrip cards. These gifts will be taken this weekend by the charitable organizations to the families in need.

Overview of the Virtue Program

St. Louis Catholic School believes every person is called to live a virtuous life.  Our Virtue Program is a systematic approach to fostering character formation in our students. The purpose of this program is to instill in each student a desire to practice Catholic virtues both at home and at school. The core of the program is the recognition of the many “teachable moments” that arise each day. The goal is to make the practice of Catholic virtues not just another subject but a way of life for every student.

Each month we will focus on one of the Theological or Cardinal Virtues to help the students understand how God is not only calling each of us to live our life in order to attain eternal life, but the expectation that we help others also attain eternal life. We feel that it is important to highlight the way in which virtues are demonstrated in the lives of Saints, ourselves, peers, community, and in the world around us so the students see how the virtue can be applied to real-life situations.  The teachers will reinforce the understanding and application of the virtue (see listing below) being focused on that month.  Students will receive tickets when ‘caught’ exhibiting any of the virtues throughout the month, but especially the month’s focused virtue.

Additional information on our Virtue Program is attached to today’s Cougar News.

PSIA Information for 2017 – 2018

PSIA is a nonprofit education organization serving all privately-schooled grade 1–8 students in Texas. Offering 59 academic contests in Math, Science, Language Arts, Speech, Social Studies, and Fine Arts since 1998, PSIA remains the most comprehensive academic extracurricular program in America for students in grades 1 through 8.

PSIA is open to any student grade 1-8.

Practices are determined by the coach.

Cost is $25 per event, per child.

Studying for these events takes practice and dedication, and for that reason there is a 3 event limit (One Act Play excluded).

Only 3 contestants per event per grade compete at District. A ‘regional’ meet will be held in December for any event with more than 3 per grade.

District Meet is March 3, 2018 at Regents School of Austin.

State Meet is in April 28, 2018 at Texas Christian University in Fort Worth.

A description of each event is included in the sign up form.

The deadline to sign up to study for an event is September 19th!

Box Tops / Helping Hands H&S Committees

Thank you to the Students and Parents for collecting 7,940 BOX TOPS during the 2016-2017 school year!

You earned $790.40 for our school. Our goal for the 2017-2018 school- year is $1000 or 10,000 Box Tops. So please, clip those Box Tops, put them in a plastic baggie/envelope with your child’s classroom information, and turn them in to either the school office or your teacher. We’ll celebrate the winning class with BoxTops parties twice this year (Dec/May).

If you know of any of our St. Louis families who are going through a life changing event or are in need of assistance, please inform the School office or your room parent. We’ll organize care calendars for meal plans and/or other needs as required.
